Harrison was born in North Bend, Ohio on August 20, 1883. At age of 21 he became a prominent state politician. During the American Civil War Harrison served as a Brigadier General in the XXI Corps of the Army of the Cumberland. After the war he unsuccessfully ran for the governorship of Indiana and then later was elected to serve as a senator of Indiana.
Harrison won the 1888 Presidential election and he received 100,000 fewer votes than Cleveland. During his Presidency Substantial appropriation bills were signed by Harrison for internal improvements, naval expansion, and subsidies for steamship lines. His presidential administration is best known for a series of legislations including the McKinley Tariff and federal spending that reached one billion dollars. Harrison signed the Sherman Anti-Trust Act "to protect trade and commerce against unlawful restraints and monopolies," the first Federal act attempting to regulate trusts.
