Angela Braly is chair of the board of directors, president and chief executive officer of WellPoint Inc., the nation’s largest health benefits company in terms of medical membership, with more than 33 million – or one in nine – Americans nationwide covered through its affiliated health plans. WellPoint offers leading health benefits plans as well as specialty products and services including life and disability insurance benefits, dental, vision, behavioral health benefit services, radiology benefit management, analytics-driven personal health care guidance, long-term care insurance and flexible spending accounts.
In 2009, WellPoint generated operating revenue in excess of $60 billion and employed approximately 40,000 associates. WellPoint primarily does business as Anthem Blue Cross, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield or Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield, and its mission is to improve the lives of the people it serves and the health of its communities.
Ms. Braly was named president and chief executive officer in June 2007 and assumed the role of chair of the board in March 2010. Ms. Braly has directed the company’s strategy, including the expansion of its integrated care management programs and tools; the divestiture of WellPoint’s preion benefits management business to Express s, Inc. in order to provide customers with more cost-effective solutions as well as enhanced services; the increased transparency through the Anthem Care Comparison tool to provide medical cost information to customers; and the measurement of the progress made in improving the quality of care that members and communities receive through a proprietary Member Health Index.
Prior to becoming CEO, Ms. Braly served as executive vice president, general counsel and chief public affairs officer for WellPoint. In this role, she was responsible for public policy development, government relations, legal affairs, corporate communications, marketing and social responsibility initiatives. She also managed the nation's largest Medicare claims-processing business and the federal employee health benefits business.
Ms. Braly was previously president and CEO of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Missouri, managing all aspects of the business and setting strategies to exceed customer needs. She joined Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in January 1999, as general counsel, overseeing the company’s legal affairs and government relations, after serving for several years as a lawyer in private practice.
Ms. Braly also serves on the board of directors of The Procter & Gamble Company, the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA), the Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare (CAQH) and the National Institute for Health Care Management (NIHCM). In addition, she is a member of Business Roundtable and The Business Council.
Ms. Braly received her juris doctor from Southern Methodist University School of Law and her undergraduate degree from Texas Tech University.
